Two groups of educators studying the effects of proposed legislation to require Bible readings in the California public schools have come to the conclusion that possible harm from such a program would outweigh possible benefits, the American Civil Liberties Union reports.
As a result of investigations by the California State Curriculum Commission–at the request of the California State Board of Education–and a local committee in Napa, Calif., it was established that there was no general agreement among various public groups as to the value of the proposed measure. As a result, the Board of Education has recommended that any legislation dealing with Bible reading provide that each school district decide for itself whether to initiate such a program.
