Rep. Emanuel Celler of New York today called at the White House to discuss a bill to be introduced next week by a bi-partisan group of Representative and Senators to revise the McCarran-Walter Immigration Act.

After talking with the President, Rep. Cellar said that Mr. Eisenhower expressed support for ”some changes” but that he would go no further than that. Mr. Celler outlined to the President the legislation to be introduced next week, legislation which would implement the President’s request as outlined in his State of the Union message.

If enacted, the new bill would make ”drastic changes in administrative features” of the present Act, increase the annual overall immigration quota from 150,000 to 250,000, and provide temporary relief for victims of overcrowding in Western Europe and escapees from Communism.
