Rival Palestinian factions agreed to continue talks on a Yemeni plan for their reconciliation.
Representatives of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah faction and the Islamist Hamas announced Sunday in Yemen that they would hold negotiations on the basis of their host’s initiative for bridging deep rifts over ideology and territorial control.
Fatah, which is favored by the United States, has shunned Hamas since it seized control of the Gaza Strip last year. Under the Yemeni plan, Hamas would return Gaza to Abbas’ authority.
Hamas has balked at the precondition, saying only that it was prepared to discuss options.
Fatah, which nearly quit the Yemeni talks last week, confirmed that negotiations would continue next month.
