Discussing prospects for immigration from Eastern European countries, Dr. Goldmann told a press conference here today that “if the present process continues–and there is information indicating that more European countries will be opened for emigration to Israel–it will be a phenomenon of not lesser importance than the very establishment of the State of Israel.”
He said that such a development would change the entire character of Israel and would present the state and world Jewry with financial problems exceeding those of the past.
Dr. Goldmann, who is also president of the World Jewish Congress, said there were good chances for reestablishment of contacts between that body and Jewish organizations in Eastern Europe. The return of these organizations to the Congress, he said, was not entirely excluded.
He reported that a meeting of seven world Jewish organizations would be held at the end of April in preparation for establishment of a unified representative body of world Jewish organizations. This body, he said, would be set up for a two-year trial period.
Dr. Goldmann disclosed that the recent session of the Jewish Agency executive had empowered him to appoint a committee to study changes in the present system by which funds from campaigns are allocated to political parties in Israel for their development projects.
