Shabtai Karakushansky, the oldest Jewish journalist in Brazil, has died here after a short illness. Born in Bessarabia 76 years ago, he arrived in Rio de Janeiro in 1922. He was the author of the first Yiddish book, “Zion” (1925) that was printed and published in Brazil. In 1927 Karakushansky founded and edited the first Yiddish daily in Rio, “Yiddishe Folkzaitung.” The newspaper suspended publication in 1941 during the Vargas dictatorship when all foreign language publications were forbidden.
