Sixteen Israeli communal workers (shlichim)–the largest group of new workers to arrive in one season–are joining the staffs of American Jewish Community Centers and YM-YWHAs this fall for two- to three-year periods of service under a program sponsored by the National Jewish Welfare Board (JWB), the Youth and Hechalutz Department of the World Zionist Organization (WZO) and the American Zionist Youth Foundation. The Israelis have been recruited for work in North American centers and Ys in an effort to enhance Jewish programming and strengthen Jewish identification. “They serve as a living bridge of understanding between Israel and America,” said Mrs. Bessie Pine, JWB personnel consultant.
