Some 500 former members of the Latvian SS forces that fought for Nazi Germany gathered for the first of two days of controversial meetings to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the unit’s founding. The Latvian government said it was not going to participate in the events, but several high-ranking officials, including the commander in chief of the Latvian armed forces, said they would attend a rally of SS veterans.
