Spain Refuses Bases for U.S. Transit of Mideast Supplies

The Spanish government has informed the United States that it would not permit the use of Spanish territory for the transit of military supplies to Israel in the event of a new war in the Middle East. According to American sources, the Spanish position is one of the conditions for the renewal of American air and naval bases in Spain. Previously, the Portuguese government ruled out the use of Portuguese territory for that purpose, During the Yom Kippur War in 1973 the Azores. served as a refueling stop for American transports flying military supplies to Israel.
