A spokesman for the State Department today confirmed that Henry Byroade, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, has discussed Egypt with British officials, and indicated that the discussion may have included a proposal by Sec. Byroade that Egypt become a member of N.A.T.O. and receive military aid.
The spokesman, Michael McDermott, had been asked to comment on a British report that Mr. Byroade has suggested that Egypt become a member of N.A.T.O. and in return Egypt would become eligible for a grant in military assistance. Mr. McDermott said it seemed apparent that the report arose “from some speculation of someone generally familiar with Egyptian developments.” He added, however, that “here in the Department we are not in a position to confirm or deny the story in whole or in part.”
