An unsuccessful attempt at suicide by a Jewish refugee physician who feared deportation ended today with the refugee and his family being granted permanent residence in Cuba. Dr. Rudolf Gashke, a German Jew who had gone to Italy with his wife and child and from there to Cuba, jumped into the sea as he was being taken to the Immigration Department. Following his rescue, the Immigration Chief gave Dr. Gashko his liberty and, upon intervention of the Jewish Center in their behalf, granted the family permission to say in Cuba indefinitely.
