News Brief

Syria reportedly has mobilized its military in anticipation of a possible war with Israel.

Syrian reserve troops have been called up and are performing maneuvers based on assessments that Israel would launch war soon, the London-based newspaper Al-Quds Al-Arabi reported Wednesday, citing sources in Damascus.

The claims in the newspaper appeared to follow warnings from Israel that it would hold Syria responsible for any attacks by its Lebanese proxy, Hezbollah.

Israel played down the report.

“I’m not aware of this,” Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai told Israel Radio when asked whether Syria is on a war footing.
