The Agriculture Ministry announced today that it would curtail the import of frozen beef which has been running currently at the rate of 30000 tons a year in order to conserve foreign currency. The Ministry said the measure was required because of the rise in the price of beef on the world market from $550 to $900 a ton. In place of beef, the Ministry said it will promote the expansion of chicken and turkey breeding. Israel presently consumes about 45000 tons of beef annually. 30000 tons of which is imported. The consumption of poultry has been much higher in recent years.
