The Board of Governors of the Jewish Agency for Israel authorized the establishment of a joint institute for Jewish studies, as long as the Israeli government pays for it. Such an institute, to prepare potential converts in Israel, was part of a proposal by the Ne’eman Committee, an intradenominational group seeking a compromise to the conversion issue. The Chief Rabbinate has rejected working with such an institute, but has not ruled out accepting converts who train there. The agency board also commended the Israeli Knesset for supporting the Ne’eman proposal.
