News Brief

The FBI has joined an investigation into the vandalism of a synagogue in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Swastikas and the words “Juden” and “abschaum,” German for “scum,” were spray-painted on the doors of the Ohav Zedek synagogue in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., late at night on March 28. An outdoor light belonging to the synagogue was damaged last month.

The FBI joined the case Monday, the same day as the Jewish Federation of Greater Wilkes-Barre began offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the vandal.

The suspect could be charged with criminal mischief, ethnic intimidation and institutional vandalism, Wilkes-Barre Police Chief Gerard Dessoye told the local Times Tribune newspaper.
