The Israeli government approved the construction of 750 new homes in a disputed suburb of Jerusalem.
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Sunday gave the green light for 750 new homes to go up in Givat Ze’ev, a neighborhood about five miles north of Jerusalem on West Bank land captured during the 1967 Six Day War.
The order drew the ire of the Palestinian Authority, which wants statehood in all of the West Bank. Israel considers Givat Ze’ev to be part of its capital, Jerusalem.
Israeli officials said the Givat Ze’ev building plans dated back to 1999 but had been held up by the outbreak of Palestinian violence in 2000.
