The lawyer for a former Italian SS officer asked an appeals court to overturn Karl Hass’ conviction for his role in Italy’s worst World War II massacre. The lawyer said Hass, who was freed despite being convicted last year, was simply following Hitler’s orders when he participated in the 1944 Ardeatine Caves massacre that killed 335 Italians, 75 of them Jews.
