News Brief

The president of the Russian and European Jewish congresses called for recognizing Iran as a nuclear power.

Moshe Kantor said such a declaration would make it easier to rein in the country’s nuclear ambitions and obligate Iran to pursue its nuclear program within the bounds of international agreements, RIA-Novosti reported Tuesday. “Perhaps it is time to recognize Iran as a nuclear power, which the corresponding assignment of obligations to enter international agreements,” Kantor said Tuesday following a meeting with the European Union president, Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa. In the last year, Russia has provided fuel and technical support for Iran’s efforts to construct a nuclear power plant. Russian officials say the best way to contain Iran on the nuclear front is to legitimize and monitor its nuclear program. Kantor chaired the committee of the Luxembourg Conference for the Prevention of Nuclear Catastrophe last year that sought to raise the profile of Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
