The United States is dedicating an additional $3.5 million in aid to the Palestinians for the forthcoming elections. “We are providing $2.5 million in technical assistance for Palestinian presidential elections and another $1 million to fund international observers for those elections,” U.S. Assistant Secretary of State William Burns, the top diplomat dealing with the Middle East, announced Wednesday at a meeting in Oslo of international donors to the Palestinians. Burns also announced an anticipated $20 million in “direct budgetary support” to the Palestinian Authority, reflecting its confidence in recent financial reforms.
