The United States, Israel, Britain and France criticized Iran after 10 Iranian Jews were convicted of spying for Israel and sentenced to prison terms of four to 13 years. Iranian officials in turn attacked Western criticism of the verdicts, saying it was a violation of its national sovereignty. The judge, who also acted as investigator, prosecutor and jury, acquitted three other Jews charged with espionage.
