Three Jewish groups condemned the U.S. House of Representatives’ passage of a bill that would ban courts from hearing gay challenges to a marriage law. The House on July 22 voted 233-194 to approve the Marriage Protection Act, which would ban any court, including the U.S. Supreme Court, from reviewing the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act. The bill effectively would prevent a gay couple who married in a state where gay marriages are legal from forcing another state to recognize their marriage. The Reform movement, the National Council of Jewish Women and the Anti-Defamation League condemned the bill.
