Top Italian officials congratulated Rome’s emeritus chief rabbi on his 90th birthday. Elio Toaff, who served as Rome’s chief rabbi for half a century, turned 90 on Saturday. Addressing Toaff as his “dear friend,” President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi called him a “great Italian patriot, a man of faith, a man of hope.”
