Diplomatic circles here expect the United States to launch a major diplomatic offensive aimed at Syria after Israel completes its evacuation of Sinai on April 25. Information to that effect reportedly comes from sources in the European Economic Community (EEC) which maintains close contacts with Washington.

West Germany officially views the final withdrawal of Israel from Sinai this Sunday as a decisive day in Middle East diplomacy and expects new diplomatic initiatives to follow. Bonn has kept silent on this point so as not to wrankle Israel. But the visit to Jerusalem by Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher, planned for May, has been postponed.
