There were no pogroms in Zhitomir or anywhere else in Russia, the plenipotentiary representative of the Ukrainian Republic in Moscow told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency today, following inquiries regarding the report in yesterday’s London Daily Express, that as a result of disorders in Ukrainia the Red Army had begun pogroms on the Jewish population.
“Pogrom rumors are spread from Berlin from the same source and for the same purposes as rumors about peasant uprisings, Red Army mutinies, the bombarding of the Kremlin and other such nonsense; and they are just as true,” the Ukrainian representative declared.
The Moscow officials of the Agro-Joint declared that if anything had happened they would certainly know about it as the Kiev office of the Agro-Joint is in close touch with Zhitomir, where the pogrom was alleged to have taken place.
