In adopting its annual budget of 5,125,228 zloties ($575,050) the Warsaw Jewish Community today decided to subsidize the schools of the Central Jewish School Association (Zischo) provided these schools insist that their students cover their heads during Bible instruction. The Jewish community also agreed to support the Jewish Theatre if no performances are given on Friday nights and Saturday.
Last November the Jewish community’s executive, on the motion of the Agudath Israel, Orthodox Organization, voted to withhold subsidies from all Jewish schools which do not require the pupils to have their heads covered while receiving instruction in Bible studies. The leaders of the Zischo schools, in which Yiddish is the language of instruction, raised a great protest. Several weeks later supporters of the Zischo schools attacked the Jewish community office, smashing furniture and cutting telephone wires after their demand for the payment of the subvention had been refused.
While the Zischo authorities disowned those who had attacked the Jewish community office, claiming that the attackers were the parents of children attending the Zischo schools, the Polish authorities threatened to dissolve the Zischo if it was established that it had been a party to the attack.
