Between 400 and 450 delegates are expected at the thirty-eighth annual convention of the Zionist Organization of America which will be held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Atlantic City, beginning Sunday, June 30, and continuing through July 2.
The number of delegates, it is estimated, will be at least 100 more than attended last year’s convention. The increased attendance is partly to be accounted for by the fact that the World Zionist Congress will be held later in the Summer, and the convention at Atlantic City will have the opportunity of designating the final list of delegates representing the General Zionists and instructing them on the stand they are to take with respect to the issues to be brought up at the World Congress.
The convention will be opened Sunday morning by Morris Rothenberg, president, who will in his annual message review the developments of the year and offer recommendations for the further strengthening of the movement.
TO URGE NEW FORM FOR AGENCY
It is understood that among the new matters Mr. Rothenberg will deal with is a proposal affecting the structure of the Zionist Organization of America so as to bring within its scope large sections of American Jewry, and that he will also suggest a new form of representation in the Jewish Agency to the end of making it a more effective instrument.
Among other proposals that are expected to come forward for discussion is a project for the creation of National Economic Board for Palestine, for the purpose of coordinating and expediting in a more regulated way the present development that is taking place in Palestine.
Other proposals of interest affecting the internal structure of the Zionist Organization and its general stand with respect to partisan ###ment will be taken up for consideration.
A symposium addressed to the question of the future structure of the Zionist Organization will be porticipated in by Elihu D. Stone, Abraham Goldberg, Rabbi Edward L. Israel, Prof. Gustave Klausner, Dr. Alexander Wolf, Max Shulman, Dr. A. M. Heller, Leo Wolfson, Rabbi A. H. Silver, Ezra Shapiro and Bernard G. Richards.
TO AIR PLATFORM
Unquestionably, great interest will be aroused by the discussion of the platform of the American delegates to the Lucerne Congress. The many questions that are to come up before the forthcoming World Congress make the stand of the American delegation of high importance.
The matter of fund raising for Palestinian purposes, it is expected, will come up for considerable debate. The point has been raised that at present several of the funds for Palestinian purposes have an element in them which appear competitive to the public.
Preceding the formal gathering of the convention, a meeting of the national executive committee will be held Saturday night, presided over by Ezra Shapiro of Cleveland, chairman of the national executive committee.
The first session of the convention proper will be held Sunday morning, June 30, at eleven o’clock, with greetings from the Governor of New Jersey and other distin##uished personalities, including the #eads of affiliated Zionist bodies.
A Shmarya Levin Memorial session with eulogies on the late Zionist leader by Maurice Samuel, Prof. Louis Finkelstein and Abraham Goldberg will be held on Sunday evening.
Monday morning, July 1, will be devoted to meetings of the convention standing committees.
The fourth session, Monday afternoon, will be devoted to the following issues: World Zionist Congress, Platform of American Delegates to the Congress, Instruction of Delegates, World Union of General Zionists, Jewish Agency for Palestine and Selection of Delegates to the Congress.
The fifth session, Monday evening, will be devoted to the presentation of reports of the several Palestine funds, including the United Jewish Appeal, the American Palestine Campaign, and affiliated Zionist bodies, and the Zionist Extension Fund. Dr. Israel Goldstein will report for the Jewish National Fund. Morris Margulies, secretary of the Zionist Organization, will present his report at this session.
The sixth session, Tuesday afternoon, has been set aside for a discussion of Zionist youth problems, the discussion to be led by Israel Chipkin, Charles A. Cowen and Milton Taylor.
The same session will see the adoption of all convention resolutions. The convention will be closed with elections on Tuesday evening, July 2.
