(JTA) — New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman was arrested in Beverly Hills, California and charged with misdemeanor vandalism.

Edelman, 33, jumped on the hood of a stranger’s Mercedes, causing damage, TMZ Sports reported.

Edelman was arrested, cited for the misdemeanor, and then released, according to the report. He was not brought to the police station following the incident, which occurred at about 9 p.m. on Saturday.

Edelman has an April 13 appearance scheduled in Los Angeles County Superior Court, the Washington Post reported, citing Beverly Hills Police Department Lieutenant Scott Dowling

Edelman and his New England Patriots did not make it to the divisional play-offs after losing last week to the Tennessee Titans. He is expected to undergo two surgeries — one on his shoulder and one on his knee — during the off-season, and has said he plans to return for the 2020 season, his 11th in the National Football League. He was the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player last year.

Edelman was raised Christian but has embraced his Jewish ancestry on his father’s side in recent years. Last month,  the athlete debuted custom cleats featuring a Star of David and the logo of the Israel Baseball Association as part of the NFL’s fourth “My Cause, My Cleats’’ campaign. The previous year, he donned special cleats in Pittsburgh to honor the victims of the synagogue shooting there in a game against the Steelers.
