The Great Synagogue of Deventer, which locals destroyed in 1941, was bought by a Turkish developer who kicked out the Jewish community amid a fight over his plans to turn the place into a restaurant.
Out of 17,000 synagogues that existed before the Holocaust, only 3,318 are known to have survived, with only a quarter of that number still functioning.
