If you go to a seder these days in the United States, you may hear the Four Questions read in Yiddish as a sop to the Old Country. At an annual model seder in lower Manhattan this week, everything was in Yiddish.
The event sponsored by the Yiddish Artists and Friends: Actors Club was held, ironically, at The Hebrew Actors Union Hall.
About 100 people, from children to senior citizens, attended the model seder, which included an old-style Yiddish Haggadah and a kosher meal with lots of matzah. Taking their turns at dramatic readings were such veterans of the Yiddish theater as Shifra Lehrer, David Rogow, above, and Mina Bern.
Younger actors from the Folksbiene Troupe, most of whom learned Yiddish for their roles, also came to the model seder.
Cantor Robert Abelson of Temple Israel of the City of New York led some singing.
And, as usual, the Four Questions were read, in Yiddish, by Nathaniel Bear, the 8-year-old son of Cantor Moshe Bear of the Dix Hills Jewish Center.
