Israeli researchers have isolated a genetic mutation, and genetic patterns in the ancestry of Jews from the Near East, which can be used to combat kidney disease. The work, led by nephrologists Karl Skorecki of the Rambam Medical Center, may lead to a treatment for people who now require dialysis.
“On dialysis, even though it’s life sustaining, there is still a short life expectancy and a hard life,” Skorecki said. Five thousand patients in Israel and 500,000 in the United States have ESKD [end-stage kidney disease]. It’s important to find out why people develop kidney disease and see if it can be prevented.”
