(JTA) — Steven Grossman became the first Jewish statewide elected official in Massachusetts in 53 years when he was sworn in as its new treasurer.
Grossman, who took the oath Thursday, is a former chairman of the state and national Democratic parties, as well as the former chair of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.
His wife, Barbara, a drama professor at Tufts University, held the Bible on which he took the oath. Among the guests in the State House chamber, according to the Boston Globe, were Larry Lucchino, the Boston Red Sox president; Shai Bazak, the Israeli consul general in New England; and Angela Menino, the wife of Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.
