In “The Blood Libels Of Blood Libels” (Jan. 21), Jonathan Mark writes: “Blood libels were so normative that in 1909 The New York Times reviewed a serious book, ‘The Jew and Human Sacrifice.’”
If Mark meant to imply that this book is an accusation against the Jews, this would be a misapprehension. Hermann Strack’s famous book is a passionate and scholarly defense of the Jews against ritual murder charges. Strack was a German Protestant and scholar of religion.
