JEURSALEM (JTA) — An Egyptian opposition leader has declared his country’s peace treaty with Israel over.
Ayman Nour, who plans to be a candidate for president of Egypt and who heads the secular-liberal Tomorrow Party, reportedly told Egyptian Radio Sunday that "The Camp David accord is over," and said that Egypt should renegotiate the accord’s terms.
His remarks followed a statement from the military issued over the weekend that said it would honor the 20-year peace treaty. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak transferred power to the military when he resigned as president on Feb. 11.
Nour, 46, was jailed in 2005 after challenging Mubarak in presidential elections. Released from prison in 2009, he was a leader of protests in recent weeks, which toppled the government and Mubarak’s 30-year-reign
