Dignity For The Deaf

We at The Jewish Deaf Resource Center (JDRC) were excited to see the article “Attention To Disabilities Seen Changing” (Jan. 21).

We have always believed in the sacred work of Sharon Shapiro-Lacks, founder and director of Yad HaChazakah, The Jewish Disability Empowerment Center. JDRC is a national advocacy organization serving the wider Jewish community and promoting access for all, including those who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. We believe that the Jewish community will only get stronger by allowing every Jew to participate to the best of their ability.

Instead of perceiving us as recipients of their tzedakah, the wider Jewish community needs to change its way of thinking and create a holy community by giving respect and dignity to the differences that God has given us.

We pray for the day when Jews who are deaf or hard of hearing can easily and with dignity gain access to Jewish communal events and can also serve on the same boards and committees offering solutions to the wider Jewish community on all aspects of Jewish life.
