New York University’s Grey Art Gallery is showing a series of photos by Allen Ginsberg, the quintessential Beat poet. Shots of his contemporaries, such as Jack Kerouac, Bob Dylan and William S. Burroughs as well as his family, including a portrait of his “Buba,” his grandmother Rebecca, preparing for a seder. The International Center of Photography is offering a double-header: “We Went Back: Photographs from Europe 1933–1956” is a retrospective of the Polish-born, mid-century photographer Chim (David Szymin), who was acutely aware of his outsider status as a Jew in Europe and who documented some of Israel’s earliest days. “Roman Vishniac Rediscovered” displays a small percentage of the astounding number of the documentary photographs Vishniac took of Jewish Europe in the 1930s. “Airport Carrier,” a two-part installation at the Storefront for Art and Architecture focuses on the years since 1973, a transformative period in Israel’s economy and the resulting changes in its architecture.
