Betty Ehrenberg, executive director of the World Jewish Congress – United States and North America, has been elected chair of IJCIC, the International Jewish Committee for Interreligious Consultation, which is widely recognized as the representative Jewish group for dealing with other world religious bodies.
Ehrenberg took office July 1 for a two-year term. Her election marks the first time that a woman has assumed the chairmanship since the group was founded more 40 years ago. The organization is comprised of the three major religious streams of Judaism, as well as major secular organizations.
For the previous two years, Ehrenberg served as vice chair. She succeeds Lawrence H. Schiffman, vice provost for undergraduate education and professor of Judaic studies at Yeshiva University.

The group’s other officers are vice chair Martin Budd and treasurer David Sandmel.
Ehrenberg has held many positions in Jewish communal organizations and has developed an expertise on such international issues as the United Nations, the Middle East, and anti-Semitism, as well as on interfaith, community and government relations. She previously served as executive director and director of international and communal affairs at the Institute for Public Affairs of the Orthodox Union, where she also served as a liaison to other religious groups and as a delegate to IJCIC.
