The article, “‘Knockout’ Comes To Crown Heights” (Nov. 29) was terribly disturbing. Not only due to the evidently increasing incidence of these sickening vicious random attacks, but also because of the offensive apologetics offered by City Councilwoman Laurie Cumbo.
Her main concern seems to be “not ruining the lives of young people who are too young to understand.” Old enough, however, to be able to inflict traumatic, debilitating or fatal injuries on their defenseless, innocent victims. Such serious crimes demand serious consequences, as well as the recognition of them as the hate crimes they are.
No one, [especially] minority communities, is well served by a political correctness that deliberately ignores, denies, minimizes or excuses such crimes committed by individual members of minorities. The Crown Heights Jewish community, like all New Yorkers, deserves to live free from fear. The incoming city administration needs to make ensuring that a top priority.
