Not Required Reading

Regarding Michele Chabin’s article, “This Romance Is Too Hot” (Jan. 8): Ms. Chabin is good enough to point out that the government exercised no censorship [in this tale of an Arab-Jewish love story]. It simply took the book off the list of required readings for high school students. Nevertheless, your article suggested that those who object to its removal from that list were narrow-minded people who did not appreciate young people reaching out to other people.

And yes, that’s true. And it’s also true that here in America most families would rather that their Jewish children marry other Jews. Such a marriage increases the odds that the grandchildren will be part of the Jewish people.

Let those who want to read this book read it. But why make it required reading for high school students?
