Democracy Works Both Ways

Seymour Reich is so concerned about Israel’s democratic values, but not one word in his essay, “Israel’s Assault On Democracy” (Opinion, April 29), mentioned the inability of Jews to pray peacefully at the Temple Mount, Rachel’s Tomb, Joseph’s Tomb or Maarat Hamachpela (the Cave of Machpela in Hebron).

Every liberal Reform Jew is so concerned about the rights of our enemies, who continue to promote hatred and killing but never show concern for the rights of their fellow Jews.

The Arab can walk freely in Israel while the Jews in their own homeland cannot walk freely.

Democracy works both ways. If you feel the Arabs have rights, so do Jews. We have the right to pray at our holy sites, to walk in our country without being stabbed, to drive anywhere in our country without fear of being killed or stoned. We have the right to defend ourselves from bombers, etc.

Every Jew has these rights, and I hope and pray that Israel defends these rights.
