Thank you for all the beautiful essays published in The Jewish Week celebrating Elie Wiesel’s “near-universal public renown” and “majesty” (July 8 and 15).
However, I don’t see him as a candidate for sainthood, as one whose faith never wavered. When the Bernie Madoff scandal erupted, Elie Wiesel, in a curious choice of words, agonized in a 2009 panel discussion: “We gave him everything, we thought he was God, we trusted everything in his hands,” leading one to think that, at least momentarily, Mr. Wiesel had prostrated himself to worship the Golden Calf, as personified by Mr. Madoff.
