I am one of the 850,000 Jews who fled Arab and Muslim persecution over the last seven decades. We now form half of the population of Israel, but our existence is nearly always ignored by U.S. Jewish liberals eager to champion “Palestinian rights.”
Neither the U.S. nor Israel is perfect, and there will always be room for improvement in the furtherance of human and civil rights. But while lamenting that the warts in both countries are being hidden from our children, Rabbi Jill Jacobs (“Don’t Be Afraid To Teach Our Kids About Israel’s Warts,” July 27) herself hides vital context and fundamental differences.
The U.S. has never been under existential threat from hostile neighbors and international terrorism, as Israel has, throughout the 70 years of its existence.
Rabbi Jacobs beats her breast about the injustice of Israel’s occupation while hiding the fact that the occupation is a consequence of Arab and Palestinian aggression, not its cause. Israel has made several offers to withdraw from the West Bank in return for a genuine peace. All were rebuffed.
Some Jews are so anxious to show how open-minded and liberal they are, that their brains have fallen out. There is something wrong when we ‘virtue signal’ our sympathy for those who would wish us all dead.
