In one of the largest donations to a Jewish institution, William and Karen Davidson on behalf of Guardian Industries Corp. in Michigan contributed $75 million to Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem for the construction of a new inpatient tower.
In announcing the gift, William Davidson of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., said in a statement that his family’s connection to Hadassah stretches back to 1917 when the organization’s founder, Henrietta Szold, spent a week in his family’s home.
“I feel privileged to be the third generation to support Hadassah’s goals and achievements,” said Davidson.
The cornerstone for the new, 14-story, $210 million inpatient tower was dedicated last Sunday and the 500-bed building is to open in 2012. It is to be named in memory of Davidson’s mother, Sarah, a founder of the Detroit Hadassah.
In another significant gift announced last week, Touro College said it had received a $10 million gift from Dr. Mark and Anna Ruth Hasten of Indianapolis, Ind. Bernard Lander, Touro’s president, said the new Lander College for Women on the Upper West Side of Manhattan would be named for the Hastens.
