The article “Continued Angst Over Day School Tuition” (Jan. 21) brought to the surface again the problem of funding the day schools. There is an opportunity for funding that the Modern Orthodox community has not taken advantage of, and that is the charter school movement.
Other religious organizations have instituted charter schools. The Christian Cultural Center opened a charter school called the Cultural Arts Academy Charter School at Spring Creek, in Brooklyn. A group of educators in the St. Paul’s Baptist Church congregation formed the all-boys Imagine Me Leadership Charter School, also in Brooklyn. There is a Greek charter school in Brooklyn, too.
Why haven’t the Modern Orthodox participated in the charter school movement to alleviate the pressure of tuition?

Editor’s Note: The new charter school in Englewood, N.J., the Shalom Academy, which has been the subject of two recent Jewish Week stories, has the support of some prominent Modern Orthodox Jews in the area.
