The editorial entitled, “A Good Veto At the UN” (Feb. 25) is misleading and disturbing. You encourage your readers to be thankful to President Barack Obama for vetoing a UN anti-Israel resolution that would have condemned Israeli “settlements” as illegal. Every American president has exercised the veto in the strongly anti-American and anti-Israel Security Council, where 14 members supported the PA resolution, presented by Lebanon. This is what one does for its only democratic ally in the Middle East. But Obama then allowed his ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, to vilify Israel and its “settlement” policy. This drew criticism from Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, who called the administration’s pronouncement shameful.
It is amazing that in the world today, where Mideast tyrants are being toppled, that the U.S. — and The Jewish Week — still talk about Israel making compromises in order to advance the “peace process.” This flies in the face of all reason. Isn’t it clear that Mahmoud Abbas, who is ready to join forces with Hamas, is just another one of the enemies of Israel and the U.S. who cannot bring any kind of “peace” to the tiny country of Israel? How can intelligent people look at the turmoil in the Middle East and honestly continue to think that the halting of building in Israel will make any difference at all in the outcome of the Mideast eruption? Those who continue to perpetrate those lies are either outrageously naïve, or deliberately malevolent.
