The Heights Of Summer

Twenty miles north of Midtown, Pearl River is the ideal site for camps — lush forests on gently rolling hills.

Located on 150 acres, the Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds, a UJA-Federation beneficiary, is home to several Jewish day camps, where more than 2,000 children, from pre-school age to their mid-teens, come each day. Some campers with special needs are older.

The camps there are 92nd Street Y’s Camp Yomi, Camp Bari Tov and Camp Tova; the Bronx House Day Camps; the JCC on the Hudson’s JCC Country Day and Camp Bashemesh; the JCC in Manhattan’s day camp @ pearl river; the YM-YWHA of Washington Heights and Inwood’s Camp Yomawha and Beacon Program; and Sunrise Day Camp Pearl River.

This year, the Kaufman site is marking its 60th anniversary in Pearl River, in Rockland County.

Together, the seven camps comprise what is billed as the largest Jewish day camp in the United States.

Each day, the campers converge on Pearl River for a wide variety of activities, including swimming, boating, tennis, archery, dancing, a petting zoo and rock climbing. There are also Jewish-centered activities, focused on the Shabbat and Jewish holidays, and daily kosher meals.
