Politicos will munch kosher bagels with Orthodox leaders at two major events planned just prior to local elections.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie will keynote at the second annual Legislative Breakfast of the Orthodox Union’s Advocacy Center on Sunday, Oct. 6.
Former CIA director James Woolsey will keynote Agudath Israel of America’s legisoative breakfast Monday, Nov. 4th, just one day before Election Day. Additional speakers will be announced at a later date, the group said.
Both events were anounced Monday afternoon.
Christie, a Repubican, faces Democrat Barbara Buono in November, but is considered likely to prevail.
OU Advocacy, formerly known as the Institite for Public Affairs, opened a regional office in Teaneck, N.J., a heavily Orthodox community in Bergen County, two years ago.
The breakfast will take place at Congregation Keter Torah there and will include members of the state legislature, the OU said.
“We are honored to have the Governor join us at this major event for our community,” said Josh Pruzansky, Regional Director of OU Advocacy-NJ in a statement. “We greatly appreciate the many other officials committed to attending as well. It demonstrates that our community is valued in both the State House and in municipalities around the state.”
A key issue for OU Advocacy is obtaining more funding for non-public schools.
The Agudah breakfast will be held at the Down Town Association in Lower Manhattan and is likely to attract many candidates vying for local and citywide offices that Tuesday.
The Orthodox Union represents Modern Orthodox congregations in North America and certifies thousands of products kosher. Agudath Israel of America is a network of haredi, or fervently Orthodox congregations and yeshivas.
