I was moved by Lisa Klug’s piece on Neshama Carlebach, “Soul Daughter” (Oct. 18). I was disappointed, however, by the omission of any mention of another part of the legacy she carries on so beautifully.
Neshama’s maternal grandfather, Cantor Glick, a’h, was an outstanding chazzan (cantor) in Toronto for many years and his beautiful voice enriched so many lives, mine especially. To hear him sing in the finest traditions of Vilna chazanut (cantorial music) was a precious, soulful experience. His son, Neshama’s uncle, composed many beautiful pieces for the synagogue and directed his choir. The whole family sang. Whenever I hear Neshama sing and see her smile, she captures the beauty of her maternal grandfather’s smile and his Jewish soul, as well as that of her father. May she continue to carry on both traditions with love and may her own creativity flourish.
