The Irish Jewish Museum in Dublin is about to embark on a $14.8 million expansion, according to the London-based Jewish Chronicle newspaper.
The expansion had been contested by neighbors, citing concerns about the projects impact on the area, but the Irish body responsible for deciding planning disputes ruled in favor of the museum, the Chronicle reported.
Currently located in two houses in the Portobello neighborhood, the building will now expand into three other properties to form one building, the paper said.
“The museum has an enormously important role to play in the wider Irish community,” said Maurice Cohen, chair of the Jewish Representative Council of Ireland, according to the Chronicle.”Its role is not only to keep the history of the Irish Jewish community alive, but also to educate the population in general to Judaism, Jews and Jewish history and to be a centre of tolerance.
