Regarding “To Kill A Hero,” Back of the Book, Aug. 21): My parents were both Holocaust survivors and I was born in a DP camp in Italy. I experienced them as abusive and neglectful and have experienced first-hand the injunction not to say anything critical about them.
The Jews of Eastern Europe were portrayed as the Enemy to be destroyed, by Hitler; passive victims by many, including Jews; cause of shame, after the war.
And then Survivors, then heroes, sacrosanct.
My concern is, when do they get to be human beings again?
