Appreciates Jewish Week Effort

The resources The Jewish Week put into identifying and trying to rectify the grave problems created by some yeshivas’ failure to provide an adequate secular education for their students are another mark of your courageous and caring leadership (“Yeshiva Reformers Brace For A Fight,” Sept. 11).

I am sure that you have received, and will receive, numerous (and sometimes hateful) letters and calls attacking you and The Jewish Week for “washing dirty linen in public.” I think it is important for you to know that very many of us applaud the efforts to make The Jewish Week a newspaper and media service that seeks out the truth and is prepared to take unpopular stands when the well-being of Jews (and others) is at stake.

Without neglecting religious studies, yeshivas that also provide a strong secular education can help alleviate the terrible poverty that afflicts too many of the most observant Jews.
