Jon Stewart offered his somber input on President-elect Trump and the Republican party, while promoting his new book, “The Daily Show (The Book): An Oral History as Told by Jon Stewart, the Correspondents, Staff and Guests” on CBS This Morning with Charlie Rose Thursday morning.
“I don’t believe we are a fundamentally different country today than we were two weeks ago,” said the former political satire host. “The same country with all its grace and flaws, and volatility, and insecurity, and strength, and resilience exists today as existed two weeks ago. The same country that elected Donald Trump elected Barack Obama,” he added.
Stewart, who stepped out of the limelight after spending more than a decade with “Comedy Central,” said that Donald Trump is a reaction to both Democrats and Republicans. He’s “not a Republican,” but a “repudiation of Republicans” he told CBS. Stewart continued by going after Republican leaders such as Senator Mitch McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan for continuously saying throughout the election that our government doesn’t work, and “we’re going to make sure… that it doesn’t work.”
Stewart mused that what surprised him was that no-one challenged Trump’s slogan, “Make America Great Again.” He explained that at no point during Trump’s election did anybody ask him ‘Well, what is it that makes America great?’
“I thought Donald Trump disqualified himself at numerous points, but there is now this idea that anyone who voted for him is — has to be defined by the worst of his rhetoric,” Stewart explained. “But everybody who voted for Trump is a monolith, is a racist. That hypocrisy is also real in our country.”
